Geotagged locations apply to job requistions/adverts on myjobscotland. The interview scheduler uses a different location function: See Interview Locations FAQ

30 September 2025

Updated code was applied to myjobscotland meaning that Job Advert locations displayed on job adverts, used in candidate searches and job alerts are based on geotagged locations.

This means we no longer pull information from the old fields:

  • Geographical Area
  • Location
  • Postcode

These fields will be deactivated shortly. If you still use these fields for other purposes, please contact the myjobscotland Team and we will assist in finding an alternative solution.

When creating and editing a job requisition, the important field is "Job Location":

"Various Locations"
Do not create single coverall locations called "Various" - this was only justified when you could only select one location.

The location filter on myjobscotland uses the post code to map the location. If candidates have set up job alerts or a searching the website within set radius, jobs linked to a single location called "various" will only display to candidates searching near to the one post code you have to assigned.

To improve the candidate experience and make the best from the feature, please add each possible location to the requisition.

An alternative if you really don't want to select all individual locations you could consider creating localised areas within your organisations job locations.

For example, Perth and Kinross Council could create a location titled "Pitlochry Area" and "Kinross Area" each with postcodes central to the area titled. Then PKC could add both locations to the job and both postcodes would be used when a candidate searches by location. Any "Various" location will be deleted. There are no exceptions.

How to Add a New Job Location

TalentLink User Access
Not all users have the ability to add locations. This is restricted to the users access rights. Use roles who have access to these rights are:
    - mjs 7 Recruit User
    - mjs 8 SuperUser
    - Job locations administrator (this is an additional role added where old roles applied)

Please contact myjobsupport if a user requires access.

There are two methods to access locations:

Option 1. Within the Job Requisition Wizard

Within the job location field, users with access will see a "+"

Users who do not have access do not see  "+"

The "+" icon will load a pop-up.

Option 2. Location Management

To manage your locations out with a job, users can go to System Administration > Manage Job Locations

In the top right, you will see a blue "Add New Location" button.

If you wish to edit a current location, you can search for the location, then select the three dots on the right and select from the options.

Creating/Editing The Location

The best field to start with when creating or editing a location is the "Search for address" if you enter the postcode the map will load a local view and then you can move the pin on the map to the precise location.

The map pin provides the longitude and latitude coordinates so our website can index the location.

The search result will auto populate the fields, however you can amend these.

The Location Name and City will display on front end search list results, and the full address will be within the advert.

NOTE: if you include a full address in the location name, this could look messy on the front end with duplicate words so try an limit what you name your locations.

Once saved this is added to your library of locations.

ALL GEO LOCATIONS MUST INCLUDE A POSTCODE OR THE JOB WILL NOT INDEX ON THE WEBSITE

Locations on myjobscotland

Jobs with multiple locations have a dropdown list to "See All Locations"

Within the location creation on TalentLink are two fields which we pull across to the front of the job search:

  • Location Name
  • City

(YouTube video includes previous version, since recording the "Search for Address has been moved down to make it more prominent and encourage use)

NOTES:-

  • Users who can add locations also have access to edit and delete them. Please consider this when agreeing which users should be assigned access.
  • There is no limit to the number of locations you can assign to the job.

We have raised an idea with CSOD suggesting they introduce the ability to 'group' locations to make it easier to add in bulk however this is not on the current roadmap.
